If you have been in Network Marketing or MLM for some time, you no doubt have either experienced or heard about how important it is to attend company trainings. Leading up to the event is a constant stream of promotional materials, emails, and conference calls all stressing how this event will change your life. Or will it?

Now , dont get me wrong. I am absolutely certain that attending your company trainings and mingling with successful people is absolutely critical to your success, but I want you to take a moment and think about how much ‘training’ you are actually receiving compared to just motivational hype.

I remember the first 4 years I spent in an MLM company, (one of the largest in the world) and I was so excited every time to be attending a live event. I almost could not contain my excitement. I got to spend time with the people I loved and shared a common bond with and I heard some incredible motivational stories about certain individuals who had overcome all obstacles to achieve success. It was one big incredible high.  Every time you left an event you had a renewed commitment to your business, you were convinced you had the most incredible products in the world and you were even more convinced that you were going to be a multiple five figure earner by the next event.

Less than 2 or 3 weeks after each event, you were back doing exactly the same things you were doing before – the incredible high you had felt previously had died away and it was business as usual and nothing had changed. No new breakthrough marketing strategies, no step by step strategies on how to generate leads for your business and certainly no cutting edge internet marketing training…. well , at least not at a traditional MLM company event.

What if you could attend a company event where you actually were presented with the top internet marketers in the world and you had dedicated trainings on specific marketing strategies in order to generate a ton of qualified leads to your business ready to do business and all without doing flyers, holding home meetings, cold calling leads and feeling obliged to share your passion with every stranger that comes your way?  I certainly didnt even think or know this was possible until recently.

At my last company event I was trained by Mike Koenigs of Traffic Geyser on world class video marketing strategies, Cherie Yvette of The Urban Cowgirl an expert PPC trainer and other top internet marketers. From this event I actually walked away with pages of notes on how to shoot a video, position yourself as an expert by offering value and then distributing that with software and get ranked on page 1 of google for keywords where buyers are looking for what you have.

Now think about this. Yes, it feels great to come back from an event and feel like you could shout from the top of the roof about how excited you are about where your company is headed and you are going to go along for the ride. But would you rather actually get the information about what the top earners are actually doing in their business to get those results? And i am not talking about some vague plan that is all about just talking to as many people as you can.

Motivational training and inspiring stories certainly have their place, but , unless you want to spend the rest of your career cheering from the crowd like a over zealous football supporter, then you might want to consider what it might be like to attend an event to learn something new and generate a ton of traffic and leads and you never have to worry about chasing anyone ever again to join your business.

The Difference Between Marketing and Advertising

Marketing and Advertising, although they sound similar but in reality they are not. Advertising is only a part of the bigger game called Marketing. Marketing encompasses complete conceptualization of a brand right from research to designing to advertising to sale. Advertising, on the other hand is a component of the marketing process which is nothing but conveying the message through variety of mediums to promote the product.

Advertising is one of the most important component of a marketing strategy and also the most expensive. Advertising constitutes sending the message across the public about your company, product or services. It also constitutes behind the scenes work like the process involving formation of various strategies and coming up with a right one to target the viewers. The strategy consists of planning things like placing ads, deciding what media to use, what time, frequency etc. The advertisements are generally placed via mediums like television, snail mail, newspapers, internet, emails, radio, magazines, mobile messaging, flyers, billboards etc. The most popular one is of course television although advertising on internet is becoming increasingly popular too.

Easiest way to differentiate advertising from marketing is to consider marketing as a cake and if you cut the cake, advertising as one of the pieces of that cake. The other pieces of cake are market research of the product, product designing, media planning, PR, product pricing, customer satisfaction, customer support, sales and many more. All these components or pieces of cake should work independently but collectively in achieving the bigger goal i.e. sell product and build company’s reputation in the market. Marketing is a marathon process involving many tasks that involve hours sometimes days of research. The research part of marketing takes the longest duration as it involves thoroughly understanding the behavior of people towards a product. Designing the product and developing advertising strategy is also a time consuming process. Only components that take less time are executing advertisements and sales. Marketing can also be perceived as a medium between consumers and the company.

But many companies often make mistake of confusing advertising with marketing. They try to ape big companies like Coke and Pepsi in advertising but they simply ignore the work that goes behind that. The classical example of this is, take the case of logo for instance. Many business owners are so hysterical about the logo of their company in their advertisements that they think that it will simply bring in the sales. But what makes a logo works is none other than the reputation of the company and the logo must have a feeling to it and should truly reflect company’s values. One should also remember that these companies spend fortunes on advertising which a new start up business can’t. Rather than spending unnecessary money on branding your product one should invest money and time in communicating to the consumers that they can address their expectations. After building reputation and growing to a big size company one can think of these lavish ideas. Educating the consumers also helps as it will give them an understanding that you know what you do and are best at doing that.

Smart marketers are aggressive in approach rather than passive. They provoke reader’s minds by prompting them to do something rather than just making them knowledgeable of the product.  Getting an internet marketing education is absolutely key to your success if you want to build your own brand and become a top 3% earner.

How to Fail in MLM Marketing

First, let me say that if you are not prepared to be in this for the  long haul and learn the skills required to become successful – then you may as well go back to your job and stop wasting your time. Harsh – that may be, but a reality that most people need to be aware of.

All too often, people come into the MLM or network marketing industry and expect that they will just give it a try for 90 days.  By making such a short sighted commitment, they have already set themselves up for failure.

Some of the common mistakes in failing in the MLM industry are:

1) No upline support or training.   While I know that anyone can succeed with or without a mentor – it is important that you do have access to training, tools, resources and support.  The chances for survival of a new MLM marketer is slim when they do not have access to training or support.

2) New MLM Marketers cannot sell – In fact I would say that most people cannot sell or like to sell. It is common for MLM companies to tell distributors that they are not selling, but rather – sharing. At the end of the day if you dont make sales – you dont make money. So I think you can make the assumption that you must learn how to make a sale.

3) Lack of marketing knowledge and training.  Here is a picture of what normally happens. The new person has just signed up in an exciting MLM program. He is taught by the manuals, meetings and so forth, how he should ‘share” his product with his friends, neighbors and relatives.

Normally, he is not comfortable with this, and if he is typical, he will have many sleepless, tossing and turning nights. He just doesn’t want to “impose” on his friends! He would feel a lot more comfortable just presenting his opportunity to strangers.

4) No true duplicative system.    Since most MLM companies are still teaching recruiting methods that were effective 20 years ago and have not adapted to the 21st century ,  the MLM companies are generally lacking in a system that is truly duplicatable and rely on the 1% of people that will work 60+ hours a week just to keep their business afloat.

5) Quitting is easy.   Most people that come into the MLM industry quit within their first 90 days and if they dont they are changing from company to company looking for the silver bullet.

I know there are many other reasons why most people fail in MLM but these above are very common. I spent 4 years in traditional MLM and even though I was not a quitter I was certainly not making any progress because I lacked the skills to properly market my business .

I was extremely excited when I found a company and marketing system that eliminated most of the usual reasons people fail. I no longer had to do any selling, telling or begging , I had access to the top internet marketers in the world, I leveraged a powerful internet marketing system that sifted and sorted out all the tyre kickers for me and I got access to a powerful marketing training in the form of a ‘wiki’. This wiki is an online interactive training platform where top producers are able to add regularly updated methods that are getting results.

Personal Branding for Success in Network Marketing

One important part of branding is the image you yourself portray.  Developing a likeable personal brand is essential for succeeding. If you want to rise to the top of your particular arena, you need to first be able to sell yourself to your potential customers. Think about it. What is the one thing that everybody wants in network marketing and that is to learn and duplicate a successful leader.

The most important thing about personal branding is to make sure that you are authentic and that you are also friendly and welcoming. The first impression a prospect receives from you is important because something I learnt some time ago is that people buy people  - not products or businesses.

Below is a list of things to accomplish to position yourself as an expert in your field and build your own personal brand:

1) Become an expert source – master internet marketing and personal branding. This is a skill that will allow you to write your paycheck for life. You are not reliant on one company for your success , you are the success.

2) Become a great communicator – Learn how to communicate and influence people to do better and demonstrate leadership.

3) Set actionable goals – Draft your annual marketing plan and review it quartely. Include specific goals, strategies and weekly and daily steps to take.

4) Build your list – Use a good auto-responder service to follow up with your list and develop a relationship with your list. People like to know, like and trust you before they buy from you.

5) Network with other successful people – Most successful people have successful friends and like to mix with other people who they can share ideas with.

6) Give something back. Giving your time, talent, and money to charitable causes is a brand-builder especially when it complements your brand strategy. Find a cause you are passionate about.

7) Lead by example – always keep up to date with marketing skills and be an action taker. You will see far more duplication and inspire others to want to duplicate you when you are a person of aciton.

Your personal brand is one of your greatest business assets. Put more  time and effort into it than you do  branding your product.  In the end, if you can’t sell yourself, you’ll find it nearly impossible to sell your product. You can be just like everybody else out there and scream and shout until you are blue in the face about how great your product or company is, but unless you invest time and money into educating yourself and building your own brand – you will never acquire the skills to be self sustaining in this industry.

To build your own brand and get a comprehensive marketing education to build your own brand online you need to learn from the best.
