The Story of Jessica and the Christmas She Won’t Forget
These last few days has left a warm fuzzy feeling inside me and made me incredibly proud to be part of the Carbon Copy Pro community of entrepreneurs. What I witnessed and saw unfold before my eyes just 2 days before christmas was nothing short of inspirational and was a reflection of the true leadership and class of our founder of Carbon Copy Pro – Jay Kubassek.
This is the story of Jessica Phillibert and her incredibly tenacious mother and how a community of entrepreneurs pulled together to collect $18,384 US dollars in 24 hours to keep Jessica at Wheaton College in Illinois to continue her studies in Business.
The Philliberts live in Jamaica and right now the Jamacian Dollar is very poor $1 US = $89 JAD and I worked out that it would cost over $1 million JAD to cover Jessicas tuition for each semester. Up until now Jessica had been on full scholarship and is a brilliant student who is recognised on the Dean’s list. Because of the economic downturn, the school had notified the Philliberts that Jessica’s tuition would have to be fully covered without assistance from the school and paid in full by December 15 so Jessica could start her tuition back by Jan 1 , 2010.
With no way of raising the funds or getting any financial assistance because she is Jamaican , Melanie (Jessica’s Mum), asked in faith if the school could extend the deadline until Jan 1 - which was granted.
Melanie really believed at this point she was clutching at straws and that Jessica would have to return home and not continue her education, but one last idea caused Melanie to take a leap of faith and write to Jay Kubassek to request any ideas or help in this matter.
On 23rd December after several emails and an improptu act of kindness – Jay Kubassek launched and announced an impromptu fund raising campaign to help keep Jessica in College. Jay and his wife Jaimie started the campaign off with a $3000 donation and I was particularly impressed with how he engineered the rest of it.
You see, every morning on our Wake Up calls with John Jackson, our VP of leadership ends his call with this quote:
“Do something for someone today in the KNOWING that there is no possible way for them to repay you”
This quote inspired Jay to reach out to our community and offer them the chance to ‘give’ at Christmas also. So Jay wrote a blog post and also decided off the cuff to attend our morning Wake Up call and let our community know what was happening and asking people if they wanted to donate to visit his blog.
Melanie, a good friend of mine and mastermind buddy contacted me on skype and shared with me how blown away she was with what was happening before her very eyes. I quickly went to the blog post and I was in amazement of what was happening. Donations of $1000 from some of the top internet marketers (including those who are not even members of CCPRO – just have done some training for us in the past) and all up a total of 78 people donated in the short space of 24 hours and reached the goal of $18,384. The funds were wired to the school on 24th December by Jay Kubassek,
What was so amazing about this story was most of the people involved did not know Melanie and Jessica, in fact, not even Jay. Carbon Copy Pro has over 10,000 members in 170 countries so naturally Jay did no know Melanie personally, however, decided on a whim to make a difference to someone’s life and at the same time engineered it so our whole community could be a part.
I know Melanie personally and I believe everything happens for a reason. If Melanie had not found the courage to reach out and simply ask a question – then this would never have happened, but also Melanie herself gives selflissly to others and in turn has received a hand up. A hand up is for people who deserve it , where as a hand out is for those that dont.
I am so proud and incredibly grateful to be a part of a community that in the midst of their own christmas celebrations could reach out and make a difference to someones life.
Thank you also to John Jackson, VP of leadership for leaving that thought with us every day on how we can impact other people .
Have an awesome 2010
